Walking and drinking on your way to Riccarton Park for New Zealand Cup Day could become a thing of the past. Streets surrounding the racecourse may have a temporary liquor ban placed on them to stop people from littering the area with alcohol cans and bottles during the last event of New Zealand Cup and Show Week on November 14. The move would mirror the temporary alcohol bans in place around Addington Raceway during Cup and Show Week. Canterbury Racing chief executive Tim Mills and Riccarton Park Function Centre manager Eric McCormick will present the proposal to the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board on Tuesday.

Only 10 acts stand in the way of Ashy Batchelor and the crown of top solo artist at the Smokefreerockquest. The St Margaret’s College student performed her way into the final 10. There were 700 entries with finalists from 23 regions sending in their video footage for selection in the national final in Auckland on September 11. SFRQ founder and director Pete Rainey said selecting the national finalists was always a challenge. “With support from their schools, great role models on the Kiwi music scene and a lot of creativity and dedication, we’re seeing a very high stan-

Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora was glad that the plan was being presented to the board on Tuesday. “I think it is wonderful idea,” he said. “Police will make a deputation to the board also. He said that it would not affect anyone that was just taking alcohol ‘around the corner for a wine’ with the neighbours. “So you can carry alcohol but

it cannot be open.” Mr Mora said that other boards have gone trough similar moves around events. “The Spreydon-Heathcote board went through the same for Addington.” While the bans will only be in place around race day they could have potential to be put in place permanently. “We have to start off with the temporary one first,” Mr Mora said.

Airport roads may close BY ANDREW KING

Plane spotters may have to find another place to watch their favourite aircraft land. Plans to close part of Avonhead and Greys Rds beside Christchurch Airport were discussed in a meeting on Monday. A city council spokeswoman said that the commissioner will write a report with a recommendation for the city council to consider. “At this stage it is expected that this will go to the August 27 city council meeting.” The roads currently run between the new business development, Dakota Park, and the airport which makes them a popular place for those who want to see aircraft come and go. Tony McFarlin a keen plane spotter said losing the Avonhead part was not the end of the world but the Greys Rd spot was great to watch aircraft. “Greys Rd is better if they are landing from the south but useless if they are coming in from the north,” he said. Mr McFarlin said that they could set up areas designated specifically for plane spotting like they have overseas. “If you look at other airports around the world they have put in areas for spotters to look at planes,’’ he said. “If they were to put them in here it would make sense from a secu-

$7500 fund for youth

The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board has created a youth fund. The $7500 fund will allow people between the ages of 12-25 to apply for money to help out with projects they are involved with in the community. The money can also be used to fund personal development and growth, leadership training, career development, Outward Bound or Spirit of Adventure and educational opportunities which are not a component of the school curriculum. Applications for the fund can be made to the RiccartonWigram Community Board and will have to be submitted six weeks prior to any event taking place.

vember 21, 2005. Closing the roads will allow the airport to proceed with development at Dakota Park and enable the company to continue its business operations associated with the extension of airport-related activities in the Special Purpose (Airport) Zone.

Artist adds colour to childhood Artist Gaby Reade has been into art for as long as she can remember. Now she is going back to her childhood, illustrating some original Brothers Grimm fairy tales. She speaks to Bridget Rutherford So Gaby, can you tell me a bit about yourself? Well I immigrated to New Zealand in 1986 from Germany and have lived in Christchurch ever since. I’ve been in Heathcote Valley for 20 years now. I live in a tiny cottage and I have a studio down in the garden which is purpose built. I’m living with my husband, Allan, and my daughter has moved out, she’s old enough now. Why did you move to New Zealand? It was mainly family reasons. My husband is from New Zealand and his family lived here so that was the first place we settled. Christchurch is close to the sea and mountains. I love the South Island, we do lots of tramping and kayaking. I used to live in Lyttelton and in the beginning we lived in Riccarton. We always wanted to stay by the Port Hills and it [Heathcote Valley] seemed a very nice spot. How did you and your husband meet? We met in Germany. We lived in Germany for about two to three years before we decided to go to

New Zealand, I think I was about 24 or 25. I’m becoming a New Zealand citizen this year, I’ve decided I’ve now been living in New Zealand over half of my lifetime, it was time to make the change. I have no idea when the ceremony is but it is sometime this year. Then I will be a full-blown Kiwi! And you are an artist, how long have you been doing that? Since I can remember. I used to work for the tourism industry but I have always been producing art. I paint oil and I’m a print maker. I stopped my other work about seven years ago and produce art full time now. I was doing marketing for Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism, I also worked in the visitor centre in central Christchurch. I did a few years contracted for Tourism New Zealand as training co-ordinator for South Island visitors centres. It was fun.

WILD IMAGINATION: When Gaby Reade is not working on her art, she loves spending time in the garden. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN Why did you stop doing that to take up art full time? I was missing my creative artwork too much, my ordinary daily work took over me. I need to be creative in order to be happy. I would rather earn less money and be happy. What are you working on now? At the moment over the last two to three years I’ve been illustrating Brothers Grimm fairy tales. I had an exhibition in February at the Tin Palace in Lyttelton that went well. I do solar etchings, it’s like an exposure by the sun. I bind them into books or frame the prints.

At the moment what I’m doing is frog prints from the original story The Frog King. In this story, the princess throws the frog at the wall because she is so frustrated, he falls down and then turns into the prince. There are 20 illustrated drawings that will be put into a hand-bound book. I usually do an edition of about five books so they are very rare. How many fairy tales have you done so far? This is my fifth one, there’s an endless supply. I really enjoy it. The Grimm fairy tales have quite a dark side to them. Bluebeard

is one and the woman opens the room and all of his previous killed wives are there. So the art is not all focused on children, they all pick up a darker side in the human. They are more sort of collectors’ items. So far I have worked on The Shoemaker and the Elves, Bluebeard, The Fisherman and His Wife, Rapunzel and The Frog Prince. Why Brothers Grimm fairy tales? I grew up with them. I started reading them from an early age and I was always fascinated by them. I read lots of books.

ORGANIC HORTICULTURE COURSES

Instruction in organic horticulture is now well established at the Lincoln-based Organic Training College. The next year-long course, which begins on 17th August, will be the eighth intake for the college. Students need no prior qualifications or experience to commence Year One and can study full or parttime. Those who have some horticultural background can go straight into Year Two. An added appeal of the course is that all fees are under $500, and full time students are eligible to apply for a loan or allowance through Studylink.

Course Director Bill Martin says it works well to start the course year in the spring. “The organic horticulture course is all about growing so we want to start the course in spring when it is the right time to begin planting.” Year One students get plenty of hands on training in subjects such as sowing and planting organic crops, soil management

and composting. The Year Two students have the option of using land and facilities on the Biological Husbandry Unit (BHU) Farm to grow and sell their own certified produce – a semicommercial venture that gives students a real taste of organic horticulture as a business. The students grow vegetables under the guidance of a mentor and sell them at a weekly stall at Lincoln University. “The Year 2 programme gives the students experience in a commercial environment without any risk. It’s the icing on the cake for a lot of the students here,” says Bill Martin.

ORGANIC Horticultural Courses

As well as the year-long organic horticulture courses a distance (correspondence) programme in organics is also available.

The Biological Husbandry Unit Organics Programmes

The Organic Training College is located at the Biological Husbandry Unit at Lincoln University. There are 10 hectares of certified organic land as well as greenhouses, tunnel houses and research areas.

memories of Grimm fairy tales The Brothers Grimm fairy tales are all collected, they didn’t write them. They take up quintessence in all of us and they live forever. I came across it [the idea] by accident and it all fell into place. There’s a scholar called Jack Zipes and he published a book of original Brothers Grimm stories. I came across that book and it just struck a chord with me. Then I just chose a story, The Shoe Maker and the Elves, because I thought I would start with a short one. What is your favourite? Just the one I’m working on always. I did The Fisherman and his Wife and I love that one. It is each story I do at the time. I’ve got a big book on the Brothers Grimm and I find one and work on it. There are hundreds to choose from, but I do like the darker ones, I don’t know why but I’m drawn to them. Do you think that fairy tales are a lot tamer these days? What do you think of that? Fairytales have been and are modified and changed all the time. Some are also adopted into more modern tales and films like Into the Woods and Little Red Riding Hood and have been used over and over again by authors and film makers alike. I don’t mind that they are. It allows me the freedom of my own interpretation when illustrating them. I do try and stay as close to the original published stories as possible. To me fairy tales are as relevant today as they were many centuries ago they are timeless reflections of

basic human fears, beliefs, dreams and emotions. A feast for me to explore in my work. What sort of art was your speciality? I was primarily focusing on oil painting, I was always drawn to the painting side of things. I do a lot of drawing. But at the moment mainly illustrations and printing. What do you like about it? That is a hard question. I guess it’s diving into a world that’s a bit unpredictable, you try to control it with planning everything, but it can sometimes be quite different to what you expected. It’s very exciting the whole creative process

from start to end. It takes on a life of its own and characters take on a life of their own. It’s a very exciting journey to work on, I’m just going with the flow. It must be hard to illustrate characters that are already well known, how do you decide what they will look like? I sometimes do come across people on the street and I am continuously bombarded by images. People watching is also great! Most of the characters just form in my mind, I also go back and look at other artists’ works as well. One of my favourite artists was Käthe Kollwitz from the mid-20th

century. She did a lot of charcoal drawings, her work was mainly about the human condition. She lived in a poorer area and did a lot of drawings of people and how they lived. How long does it take you to do each piece? Well they are not very big, the frog ones are only about 15cm x 15cm. I do larger scales as well but they are for life drawings. They take me a few days to get them completely right. Do you do a lot of sketches and planning before you start each piece? Oh yes, I sometimes do around four or five sketches before I start. Sometimes I start straight away and I discard it and start a new one. I have heard a lot of writers

or artists get lightbulb ideas at random times and have to run off to write them down, does that happen to you? Yes I do, I’ve got lots of notes everywhere in my studio. I’m actually incredibly organised in the studio, but that’s just me. Any ideas on what you might move onto after Brothers Grimm? No, I’m just focusing on this at the moment, I never worry about that. Aside from your art, what are some of your other hobbies? Oh I love gardening, I’ve got quite a big garden. We kayak and go tramping and we go to Cass Bay or the estuary here in Heathcote Valley to do that. My husband has built a couple of kayaks for us that we also use.

Disengaged teens get second chance at education Christchurch teenagers once disengaged with the schooling system have the chance to experience an array of short courses through a programme starting in the city. The 20-week course, #Ultimate, was launched at Trainme (Vision College campus) last month with the purpose of giving students aged 16-19 a taste of many different careers at no cost. During the course, #Ultimate students undertake up to eight short courses, including quad bikes, tractors, barista training, chainsaws and childcare; eventually gaining a National Certificate in Employment Skills. #Ultimate head of school, Hannah Fick, said #Ultimate is truly unique, with no other higher education options in the Central South Island offering such a vast number of combined short courses at once. “These are students who had not even achieved NCEA Level 1, typically dislike school, and for some, the prospect of further education was once very bleak,” she said. “#Ultimate provides them with a learning environment that is simultaneously fun, educational and attention-grabbing.

Already the course has enrolled 18 students for the first 20-week block. “We couldn’t have hoped for a better response from kids who were once disinterested in

learning,” she said. The course is being launched following remarkable success at the Hamilton Trainme campus. “#Ultimate was launched in Hamilton last year and 20 out of the 23 students that completed the first course are now either full-time employed or enrolled in higher education. • Enrolments for Christchurch’s debut #Ultimate course are under way now. Winter conditions continue with a large number of car crashes during the week including several where vehicle occupants have been trapped and in need of extrication. I know it’s easy to say and we hear it continually from police when they are interviewed by the media but some of the things that cause no problems in summer border on stupidly dangerous on icy or wet roads. Most of us don’t go out in the car expecting to end our journey in a mangled wreck, yet too many drive in a way that they should be. It’s winter. Drive accordingly. Another winter phenom-

enon occurred in Cranford St last Thursday where a fire crew turned out to a wheelie bin on fire. Mostly this occurs at night time and the cause is the deliberate actions of morons who think it’s funny. This occasion, however, the cause was fire ash neatly disposed of in the wheelie bin. Obviously, the fire had not been out for more than five days. Because this is the period of time it can retain enough heat to start fire. Just a couple of kitchen fires this week. However, in these incidents, at New Brighton and Broomfield, people got enough smoke or were burnt enough to be taken to hospital. If a fire is too big to be controlled, get out. Shut the door. JK draws the laughs

All Blacks legend and antidepression campaigner Sir John Kirwan spoke to students from four schools at Christchurch Boys’ High on Thursday. Reporter Andrew King went along to listen

He has personally ventured down a dark path then came back to the light – Sir John Kirwan has been the face of tackling depression for many years now. On Thursday, he spoke to students from four schools in Christchurch Boys’ High’s ‘big room’ letting them know that even people who look on top of the world can be struck with the illness known as depression. He started by getting everyone off their seats and shaking off the blues by dancing around reducing the whole room to laughter. “Did you see what happened there?” he asked the students. “There was laughter and smiles all over the room. Sometimes it is just that simple.” Then he asked everyone to find three people they didn’t know and give them a hug. Laughter erupted again as students scrambled about to find three strangers to embrace. “Some days you need that. You need to reach out and get a hug. Maybe not always physically but mentally too,” Sir John said. It broke the ice as students from different schools in close quarters felt more at ease with each other

Japanese students arrives for exchange programme This year’s ChristchurchKurashiki Sister City Student Ambassador programme has kicked off with a group of 14 high school students from Japan arriving in Christchurch. The students, and group leaders Umi Ishikawa from Kurashiki City Council, and Masahiro Miyake from The Kurashiki Koryukai, arrived last week and were welcomed by Mayor Lianne Dalziel. They will stay with billet families during their twoweek stay. The programme is run yearly by the ChristchurchKurashiki Sister City Committee, and this is the 23rd year it has run. Committee members will look after the group – taking them to see the sights of Christchurch and join in fun events. The group will leave Christchurch and return to Kurashiki on August 7. Fourteen Christchurch students will then head over to Japan in September where they will experience the Japanese culture for two weeks.

Rangi teaches mindfulness “Impressive” and “positive”. Two words Bridgitte Newberry uses to describe the new classes her daughter has experienced over the last two years. Learning how to manage themselves is something all Year 11 and 12 students will include in their daily education at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School from next year after the success of a ‘wellbeing programme’ was trialled in 2015. The programme is designed to teach students a ‘growth mindset’ (the idea that intellectual abilities can be developed) which helps them engage with school, invigorating them to take on challenges and persist in the face of obstacles. Student well-being and academic performance are nurtured by cultivating positive emotions, resilience and positive character strengths. Mrs Newberry has noticed her daughter Ella, Year 12, is more positive, happier, confident and broadminded as a result of the Rangi Well-being Programme. “I’m a health professional so I know the importance of well-being and the fact that these girls are being taught a number of skills through mindfulness, positive psychology, yoga and meditation will stand them in great stead as they grow up. Imagine if we had been taught yoga and mindfulness in our day.” Principal Julie Moor says the well-being programme at Rangi has been well received by both the

girls and their parents. “Before we introduced the trial programme, we asked parents in an informal survey what they wanted for their daughters at school?” “The number one reply was happiness. “Interestingly when the girls were asked what they wanted at their school, one of the most common answers was fun. “We know that well-being and having life-coping skills help confidence and are keys to that happi-

ness and having fun,” she said. There is extensive evidence that shows positive programmes like this are significantly related to improved student well-being, relationships and academic performance. Rangi Ruru teacher Lisa Johnson has returned to Rangi from the Phuket International Academy, and said more schools around the world are integrating well-being programmes in to their curriculum. “Our well-being programme

is an extension of Rangi Ruru’s ‘values education’ which is at the heart of the school,” she said. “Mindful education helps enable our girls to become more aware of themselves and others. “The ability to focus your attention on the present moment is an essential skill that needs to be practised. Students’ well-being is the underlying foundation for every girl’s academic learning and success,” she said.

Rates paid but no sewer BY ANDREW KING

Residents in the Awatea Block, Wigram, are paying rates for a sewer they don’t have. Letters were sent to property owners explaining a rates rise from July 1 for the new sewer they have access to. The problem is they are not connected to the sewer in spite of asking the city council for those facilities for the last 20 years. The letters arrived on July 9, eight days after they had started paying for it. Awatea Residents Association

secretary Kay Stieller has spoken to the city council and it has asked staff to look into it. Ms Stieller said she has been told by the city council that if it finds that she is right about not having a sewer, it will refund part of her rates to make up for the mistake. Ms Stieller said that it was typical of the city council which she said don’t really know what is going on in her neck of the woods. “There’s sewers around us so the city council assumed that we would be able to connect up to them,” she said.

“There has been a lack of cohesion and consultation. It’s been happening for 20 years, they need a kick in the backside.” A city council spokesman said that if the residents were close enough to be hooked up to the sewer system then that would be factored into their rates. It all depended on what distance residents were from the new sewer system that had been installed. If they are within 30m of a sewage pipe that can be connected to, they would be billed for it but if the dwelling is further than 100m away then it will not.

Residential parking options BY ANDREW KING

Parking options are available for those who cannot find a park at or around their house. People who have no parking available to them either on their property or on the street, can apply to the city council for residential parking to be installed if they meet all the right criteria. To be eligible you have no offstreet parking on your property, have no space on the property that could be converted to offstreet parking and no private parking within a reasonable distance that could be used. fic engineer Wayne Anisy told a community board meeting last week, that they receive a few applications around areas that have had development and parking restrictions added to their streets. The cost of a parking permit once approved is $53 per year. Acting unit manager of Transport and City Streets Paul Burden said that applications for permits have decreased over the last few years because there were less people in the city centre. “They were originally only applying for permits in the middle of the city,” he said. “It has decreased [applications] as most of them were

applied for in the city centre.” Mr Burden said they had seen a rise in permits that had been applied for in the suburbs and they would see further rises in the future as the city council pushes for more population density in the city centre. “Council wants to increase density in the city centre,” he said. “I can see a time in the future when we may have to look a residents parking scheme. “If we can get higher density, which I think is a good thing, then we will need to look at broader options when it comes to parking.”

Simple invention takes

EXCESS CANDIDA? pain out of arthritis to food intolerances, poor health, allergies and susceptibility to asthma. The immune system becomes weak and colds, influenza and chronic infections occur often. The Candida yeast often enters the blood stream as a fungus. In the bloodstream it travels around the body to places where the environment is suitable for it to inhabit. Symptoms will vary depending on its location in the body. If it enters the brain, it can cause depression, anxiety and foggy thinking. Some researchers believe the Candida fungus can release a pleomorphic micro-organism or virus whose form changes depending on its environment. This is believed to be a factor in cancer and other chronic health conditions. However it is the body’s weakened immune system and toxic environment that is the real cause of disease. Candida imbalances in the gut can be reversed fairly easily with correct nutritional supplementation and care with the diet and lifestyle. Cleansing the Candida fungus and its resultant toxins from the body can require a bit more effort and may take some months. However when this is achieved a great burden will have been removed from your body resulting in more optimal health. The Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy can provide a detailed nutritional protocol to cleanse the body and improve your overall health and wellbeing. Talk to us today as we are always happy to help! Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, phone 388 5757.

Although arthritis is a serious health condition with no known cure, you can do a lot to make coping with it easier.

I

t may surprise you, but moving is one of the best pain relievers. We used to think that people with arthritis should rest their joints but we now know that resting can increase the pain. Gentle exercise is vital to managing arthritis pain successfully. Exercise helps relieve pain and stiffness, and increases joint flexibility. It also increases muscle strength, and strong muscles help support and protect knees and hips, and also improve balance and mobility. Movement also increases circulation, and improving circulation may improve numerous other problems, including the condition of pain–affected limbs. Keep moving even while you sit. While exercise may be important, it’s not something which particularly appeals in wintery weather and especially if every movement is painful. This is where the AirCycle exerciser comes in. The AirCycle enables you to keep joints

and muscles moving while you watch TV or work at a desk. The exercises promote circulation, strengthen muscles and help keep your joints “oiled”. Designed to ease the pain and stiff joints of arthritis sufferers, the AirCycle also helps people with other conditions (see advert). AirCycles are available in pharmacies at around $35. For more information and orders, visit www.aircycle.co.nz or phone 04 569 5013.

A causative factor for all these symptoms and more can be a yeast organism called Candida albicans. It is often underestimated what a profound effect it can have on our health and wellbeing. It is estimated around 70 per cent of people have a Candida overgrowth in their intestines, mouths or on their skin. It is normal and beneficial to have some Candida in the gut where it is normally kept under control by the good gut bacteria or probiotics that feed on this yeast. However using antibiotics without probiotic supplementation, sickness, poor diet, insufficient stomach acid and medications are some of the common factors that can allow the Candida to thrive. The tentacles of Candida can penetrate the intestinal wall over time, causing inflammation and leaky gut, leading

Get rid of dampness in your house

Now with the colder and wetter weather on its way, homeowners are focusing on ways to make their homes comfortable, warm and healthy for their families throughout winter.

R

ising damp is an issue that affects many of our older properties which suffer from poor, or no, insulation. In Canterbury especially, postquake, many people have relocated to homes that suffer from rising damp, which can be associated with health problems. Independent tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise from the ground and enter a house every day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation and musty smells. Moulds can produce various allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and very young are especially vulnerable. Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a locally owned and operated firm. The team understands the problems caused by rising damp and are there to help. They will come to your damp home and pump a lightweight,

flowable foam concrete under your timber floored home. Specially adapted for our New Zealand conditions and applications, it provides a layer of protection against rising moisture. An unexpected benefit that the team at Canterbury Foam Concrete have noticed recently is that many owners of properties which had underfloor foam concrete installed, reported that it also provided protection against liquefaction after the earthquakes. Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd now for your free, no obligation quote and complimentary appraisal of your underfloor ventilation needs. Phone 03 376 4608 or 0508 362 626 for more information.

We welcome your feedback on stage three of the proposed plan – in the form of a submission. Tell us whether you support or oppose the proposed plan; which parts you are referring to and what you would like to see if you don’t agree with our proposals.

The rules are there to ensure we sustainably manage our district’s resources, providing for the needs of our community while managing the effects of our activities. You need to know what is being proposed in the review, so you can understand how it might affect the use of your land or your property rights in the future. Got a question or need help? Uninsured & Cracked = Opportunity. John Curtin deservedly has an enviable reputation in Canterbury design circles and this 4 bedroom family home is no exception. Though it has experienced better days, all may not be lost. Deemed uneconomical to repair by the insurance company and with the tenants now moving on, the home has become surplus to the owners requirements. Auction: Thursday 6th August (unless sold prior) View at: fourseasons.harcourts.co.nz ID#HR4058 Paul Middleditch Ph: 027 276 7047

“As Is Where Is” - Unbelievable Opportunity. Owners have received a settlement from their insurers & have no interest in repairing or rebuilding this 2 bedroom smaller home. Clear instructions for the property to be sold on an “as is where is basis”. Has been generating $310 per week in rent. EQC scope of works, Structural assessment & Geotech Report available. Auction: Thursday 6th August (unless sold prior) View at: fourseasons.harcourts.co.nz ID#HR4060 Frank Dowle Ph:027 528 0480

As Is Where Is – Immaculate Surprise. Renovated just prior to the quakes. Spacious 3 bedroom home boasts modern kitchen & bathroom, 869m2 section, fully self-contained sleepout & 2 heat pumps. Our motivated owner’s instructions are clear; ‘Were moving on’! Auction: Thursday 20th August (unless sold prior) View at: fourseasons.harcourts.co.nz ID#HR4063 Sam Steele Ph: 027 864 3254
